Web-based gradebook keeps parents iinformed

Job action by teachers means students across B.C. are not bringing home complete report cards.

However, that doesn't mean Clearwater Secondary School parents are in the dark about how their youngsters are doing, according to school principal Alan Stel.

The reason is CSS is using JupiterGrades, a web-based gradebook that is based in the United States.

"It's one of the most innovative pieces of technology I've seen in my career," said Stel. "It's a great tool. All you need is a password and you can see how your son or daughter is doing."

The school has been using the gradebook system for about one year. Teacher Tracy Buck saw it in action while in Kelowna and brought the idea back.

Parents can go online and get a list of assignments given their son or daughter, the status of those assignments, grades, and a chance to directly communicate with their teachers.

The link to the JupiterGrades website is located on the school's website. It is easy to use and nearly all parents now know about it, Stel said.

"The kids recognize the value of it," said the principal. "They're not excited about it, but it does make them responsible. The level of responsibility goes right up."
