Vavenby x-country skiers cross finish line

On Feb. 24 the students of Vavenby Primary left by bus to Blue River for the Blue River ski race

On Feb. 24 the students of Vavenby Primary left by bus at 7:20 a.m. to head to Blue River for the Blue River ski race. The students shared the bus with students from Barriere.

The students all agreed that, even though it was a freezing cold day, everyone had a good time. Four adults accompanied the students.

The races were held so that each grade level of Raft River, Blue River, Barriere, and Vavenby raced against each other. The adults were proud that all of the Vavenby students crossed the finish line. Taniah Toscano, in Grade 2, earned gold for coming first. Nathanial Toscano is Vavenby’s only Kindergarten student and he tried really hard to earn a medal.

Lunch consisted of green salad, juices, lasagna, bread with peanut butter, apples, and muffins.

They arrived back at the school about 2 p.m., some napping on the way back home.

Trip to Calgary

On Fri., Feb. 25, 2011, four teenagers from the Vavenby Christian Church’s youth group went to Calgary to attend a special weekend at the Alberta Bible College called Emerge. This is an annual event. Adam Moilliet and Cadence Moilliet were the two leaders who went with them. The students had to be in Grades 9 - 12 to attend.

Early registration cost $50, late was $70. The registration covered Saturday’s breakfast, lunch, and supper, and Sunday’s breakfast. Everybody brought extra money to pay for meals during the trip to and from Calgary.

Everybody was billeted with people involved with the college or with students going to the college. The three Vavenby boys stayed at a place that had an in-door pool, sauna, and pool table.

The purpose of the conference was to find out more about the college and to encourage youth to answer the call of God whatever that may be in their life. It doesn’t mean that one is going into the ministry but it provides youth a strong Christian foundation for no matter what field they choose.

While at the conference all the teens were put into groups of their own age. They would have discussions, worship with lively music, and attend college courses. There were demo classes, a speech contest, a scavenger hunt, a banquet, and short funny skits. The conference also gave everyone a chance to meet lots of people their own age.

The five-minute speech contest was held Saturday and the theme was Freedom for Love. Vienna Moilliet won the $1000 scholarship for the Alberta Bible College. She was really pleased. Vienna is planning on going there this fall and really looking forward to it.

Vienna feels everyone who went to the conference enjoyed it. Seth Moilliet said, “It was the best weekend of my life.” They all arrived back home on Sunday, Feb. 28.
