Vavenby Primary School had 55 students present on Thursday morning, Nov. 30! There have not been that many children in the school for quite a few years.
A workshop, hosted by Robert Wielgoz, the district coordinator for career education, was held at the school.
The 10 Vavenby students and teacher Adam Forsyth, six Blue River children and teacher Maymie Tegart, and 39 students from Raft River with teachers Ryan Wilkes and Alli Patterson took part. Everyone congregated in the gym.

All of the children were mixed into groups of two or three. Their assignment was to come up with ideas of what concerned them about transporting their pets.
Worksheets were handed out to print or draw their concerns. These papers were used for all the steps of the assignment.
The next step was to choose one of their problems and come up with four ideas to solve it. They drew these on another of the sheets.
The partners were then joined with others, making larger groups of six. Everyone presented their solutions to the new groups. Mr. W. told the students to criticize these solutions “like helpful friends.” Then it was back to the original partners to draw the one solution that they would build.
Before this step took place the students were given a break and Vavenby teacher Adam Forsyth welcomed the Raft River and Blue River schools to Vavenby.
After the recess the final step of the assignment began. The children went back into their larger groups of six and decided which solution would be the best one to build. Parts from other ideas could be added.
Each large group was given a small box of building materials such as scissors, a measuring tape, pencil crayons, glue sticks, pliers, etc. There were other supplies on tables around the room. One table had a drill and some saws. Mr. W. supervised that part of the gym.
The children had until lunch time to create their projects. Everyone quickly got to work, making a lot of excited noise.
Lunch was also held in the gym. The school provided three kinds of soup, cereal bars, muffins, cookies, and buns. There was lots of bottled water and apples as well.
After lunch the students were given a little more time to finish their assignment. Then it was time to present them to everyone else. All the projects were imaginative, a lot covering the concerns of pets needing food and water. One project even included an exercise wheel for a small animal.
Elf leaves treats for kids
There is an elf in the Vavenby Primary School. The students call him Snow-Globe.
He has been leaving notes, treats, and some mischief in the classroom. One morning the children found a candy-cane under their desks.
Craft sale in Vavenby home
Doris Scarff held her annual Christmas at my House from Nov. 29 to Dec. 1. She had her artwork, jams and soup mixes for sale.
Suzanne Ellis sold her handmade jewelry and origami gift card pockets. There were stained glass pieces by Caroline Kramer, a line of hemp clothing by Jacqui Courchesne, scarves, t-shirts and Christmas CDs by Shirley de Vooght, and Watkins products for sale by Trevor Harder.
Last church potluck before New Years
Vavenby Christian Church held its last monthly community potluck lunch before New Years on Wednesday, Nov. 29.
Approximately 24 people attended and there was a large amount of food to choose from. Colleen Rothwell made a delicious vegetarian soup.
There will be no luncheon at the church in December so come on out to the one on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 11 – 2 for a good time.

Santa on Saturday
Vavenby’s community Christmas potluck dinner will be this Saturday, Dec. 9, at the hall.
The doors open at 5 p.m. and dinner will be at 6 p.m. Santa Claus will be flying in.
Christmas in the Village
This Sunday, Dec. 10, will be Christmas in the Village at Vavenby Christian Church, beginning at 11 a.m.
There will be lots of Christmas music and some presentations. A lunch will follow. Come on out to get into the Christmas spirit.
New crib players sought
The crib club is looking for more players. It is held at Vavenby Community Hall every Tuesday beginning at 7 p.m. The cost is $3 for the entire evening.
