Vavenby ice rink and park to see upgrades

TNRD board voted to approve funding to rebuild ice rink and revamp community park

The outdoor ice rink in Vavenby will be replaced, and the community park will see irrigation upgrades, after the Thompson-Nicola Regional District board voted in favour of allocating $100,000 towards the projects from the Canada Community-Building Fund.

According to a board report, the outdoor ice rink was built in 2005 and after 16 years of outdoor exposure, it has deteriorated. It was determined it was most effective to replace the rink, rather than repair it. The project has a completion date of Sept. 30, 2022.

Due to hotter summers and decreased rainfall, the community park grass has been overtaken by invasive plants. To combat this issue, an irrigation system is recommended to give the grass enough water to maintain a healthy root system. It would also make the park more attractive, providing a better play area within the ball diamond.

The projects will take $200,000 to complete, half of which will be allocated from the Canada Community-Building Fund and the remaining funds from the Area A community parks budget.
