Princess Kelsey Rexin appears unperturbed by the ghouish monster lurking behind her shoulder (otherwise known as Denny MacDonald). They were taking part in a community Hallowe'en party at the Vavenby Hall on Oct. 31.

There was a fantastic Hallowe’en party held at the community hall on the night of Oct. 31.

Between 70 to 80 children and adults – a great turn out for Vavenby – showed up to take part in the costume judging, to eat the free hot dogs and drink the free hot chocolate, to gather around the huge bonfire, and to watch the awesome fireworks at the end of the night.

There were five groups for the costume judging – preschool, Kindergarten and Grade 1, Grades 2 and 3, Grades 4 to 7, and Grade 8 to adults. One ribbon with special printed on it was handed out to each age group. There were eight specials handed out to the Grade 8 – adult category. Everyone else received a participant ribbon. Suckers and a Hallowe’en candy were also handed out.

Many thanks must be given to Val Bellows and Kathy Cederholm for organizing such a great party and for all those who helped. Costume judges were Marge Taylor, Sandra Graffunder, and Lorne Yoerger. Working in the kitchen were Bellows, Cederholm, Lori Koch, and Fay Jones. Thanks also to Vavenby Volunteer Fire Department for building and tending the bonfire and for setting off the fireworks.

Thanks must also be given to the organizations and many people who made such generous donations to help bring back this community event. It would not have been possible without this money.

Hallowe'en at Strong Start

On Wednesday, Oct. 29, the Strong Start children at Vavenby School made Hallowe’en cookies for their craft.

The children were handed some dough. They rolled it out flat and then chose a cookie cutter. After cutting out their cookie they decorated it.

Pizza was served for their snack. This was a special day.

The primary students (Kindergarten to Grade 3) celebrated Hallowe'en in the afternoon. They looked into a tank of water to see some "ghost eyes" floating around.

One student, Hunter Crystall, said that they were very difficult to see because they were ghost eyes. The children watched a movie called Scooby Doo and the Enchanted Werewolf and they were given goodie bags. It was a fun afternoon.

Colouring contest winners

Winners of Vavenby General Store’s colouring contest were: Courtney Prince for the five-and-under age group, Gavin Prince for age group six to nine, and Dakota Flegel for age group 10 and up. Prizes were based on an art theme.

Boil notice returns

Vavenby residents were phoned on Wednesday, Oct. 29, and put back on boil water until further notice.

No darts on Thursday

There will be no darts at the community hall on Thursday, Nov. 6, because of the all candidates' forum in Clearwater that night.
