Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the local Legion’s 2020 poppy campaign brought in more donations than in recent years.
The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 259, Vavenby and District 2020 Poppy Campaign had $8,197.85 to dole out in grants to the community.
The funds this year were divided among a variety of projects, including new beds for the local long-term care centre, equipment for the local search and rescue team and kitchen appliances for the hospice society.PTSD service dogs for veterans — $500
Royal Commonwealth Ex-Service League, helping Commonwealth vets who fought for freedom — $500
Forestview Place for new beds — $500
Clearwater Search and Rescue for medical equipment, slings, stretchers, ropes, etc. — $500
Honour House Ranch, near Ashcroft, for spotlight, AED wall cabinet, defibrillator and tick removal kit — $1,000
Clearwater & District Hospice Society for new refrigerator and microwave in hospice room kitchenette — $500
Bursaries to be paid out in 2021 — $1,000
Poster & Literary contest prizes, lapel pins, etc. — $750
Emergency local veteran’s assistance fund — $3,000
