Thompson Rivers University - Clearwater Regional Centre is thrilled to present two “Effective Meetings” workshops. The workshops will benefit those involved with not-for-profit organizations, government, business, volunteer organizations, and other groups.

Sylvia Arduini, Coordinator, TRU - Clearwater Regional Centre, has been approached by several community organizations to provide this type of training since many boards would like to improve the effectiveness of their meetings and the quality of their minutes.

Based on Robert’s Rules of Order, these sessions are geared towards people who have little or no knowledge about “formal” parliamentary procedures.

The course is scheduled for Wednesday, May 16, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Community Resource Centre. Cost is $25 (includes both sessions).

The first session (9 a.m. - noon) will consist of a “Primer on Meetings and Minutes” (preparatory work for meetings) while the second session will focus on “Meeting Mechanics” (actual operations of meetings including introductory information on parliamentary procedure).

The sessions are open to anyone who wishes to learn more about meetings and how they work.

The instructor, Lisa Zwarn is an enthusiastic presenter who makes a typically dry subject fun! Ms. Zwarn is a member of the Professional Registered Parliamentarian National Association of Parliamentarians. She teaches the Local Government Administration Certificate Program at Capilano University, is the Program Manager Local Government Leadership Academy, and is the Director of Legislative Services and Human Resources with the city of Langley.

According to Leslie Groulx, Chief Administrative Officer for the District of Clearwater, “Lisa Zwarn is a dynamic presenter who brings energy and enthusiasm as well as a wealth of knowledge to any session she is part of. Her knowledge and ability to teach to all levels will be an asset to any group, organization, not-for-profit, or service club in the community.”

Sherri Madden, Services Coordinator for the TNRD - Wells Gray Country/Thompson Headwater Services Committees, states: “Ms. Zwarn is able to impart techniques that will enable the organizations to run more effective meetings that stay on subject and engage the participants, perhaps resulting in more people wanting to become volunteers.”

The workshops are being sponsored by the Wells Gray Community Forest Society. Our community is fortunate for the opportunity to access an expert of Ms. Zwarn’s calibre. The services of professionals in this field are costly. The Community Forest funding enables the workshops to be offered at minimal cost, which will hopefully enable more community groups to participate in these worthwhile workshops.
