On Wednesday, Oct. 19, Vavenby Volunteer Fire Department chose a Fire Chief for a Day from the students at Vavenby Primary School.

All the students’ names were put in a hat, Barb Pennell drew one and Nathaneal Toscano was the lucky winner. In the evening he was picked up at home in one of the fire trucks and brought to the hall. Volunteer Jaimie Greene explained the different equipment to Toscano and Austin Greene demonstrated the SCBA - the self-contained breathing apparatus. Afterwards Toscano was driven up towards the highway with the lights flashing and the siren being blown at times.

Toscano was very excited. It was a surprise when the fire engine showed up at his house to pick him up. He hadn’t known anything about the draw. He has decided now that he will be a fireman when “he grows up”.

Vavenby residents may remember that in the past the Fire Chief for a Day was picked up at home in the morning, taken to school, and then taken home again at the end of the day. Fire Chief Sean Dawson said that was not possible this year because all the volunteers work.

Affordable social events in Vavenby

More people are needed to keep crib and darts running. They are great social events and only cost $3 an evening. Crib is on Tuesdays, darts on Thursdays, and both begin at 7 p.m.
