His day started with an unusual awakening. He had been taken off the guard rotation a week before so he could prepare for the quest, but still hadn’t been able to get used to waking up to the sun.

His roommate was already out doing his rounds. He got dressed and made his way to the captain’s office to let him know he was going to be leaving later in the morning. Adrian knocked on the door and waited for it to open, but the captain wasn’t there. He shook his head in disappointment. He had really hoped to hear some form of reassurance or advice from the only father-like figure he’d ever had.

Adrian continued to walk down the corridor to the guards’ dining hall to get breakfast. He reached the room and it was bursting with energy. It always was, but today it felt different, probably because it was the last time he would be there for a while; it brought on an unfamiliar sadness. He tried to shake the feeling of uneasiness, but it stuck to him like honey.

After eating his meal, Adrian started his walk to the stables. It wasn’t a far walk, only a few minutes from the training grounds. He arrived at the stables early, which gave him time to think. He still wasn’t sure that going was the best idea. He had agreed to go on a quest with the girl who probably wanted him dead.

After a while, he watched them come into view, both with copper red hair. Atticus and Evelynne, the two people he had spent most of his childhood with. His mother had been the Queen’s maid for the first 16 years of his life, so he had become fairly good friends with the two youngest members of the royal family.

He smiled and waved. A bit of the tension he’d felt the past few days began to lift off of his shoulders. Maybe it wouldn’t be as bad as he had originally thought. Evelynne had seen him and hadn’t immediately started yelling or screaming, so that was a plus. But that didn’t mean the rest of the quest would go so smoothly. Atticus said a final goodbye to his sister and gave him a brief nod of acknowledgement.

Evelynne and Adrian mounted their steeds and adjusted their packs. He waited for Evelynne to take the lead and after a moment they were off, the princess with a secret and the boy who was secretly in love with her.
