Students at Raft River Elementary School were honoured for their efforts participating in the Royal Canadian Legion’s annual National Youth and Remembrance Contest.
Branch #259 vice president Wayne Wysoski attended the local school on Tuesday, Feb. 6 to present awards.
Every year for over 50 years the Royal Canadian Legion has sponsored the annual poster and literacy contests across Canada, open to all students. The contest is divided into categories such as; poster, essays and poems.
“The students at Raft River elementary entered 26 different articles of remembrance this year. Each participant receives a certificate and a cheque from the Legion’s Poppy Fund. The entries are judged in Clearwater and any deemed ‘exceptional’ are then sent to our B.C. Yukon command centre where they are then judged to win the title of ‘best poster in B.C.’ and it’s a fairly elaborate contest across the country,” said Wysoski.
The Legion vice president was pleased to offer the students the achievement certificates and cheques on behalf of the local legion membership in the North Thompson adding, “It was really a good turn out.”
The awards were given out to students entering the contest from Grades 2 to 6.
