A semi-trailer heading for Kamloops went off Highway 5 into Allingham Trailer Park at Vavenby around 8 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 16. Icy highways appeared to be the cause of the accident. The semi was empty so it had no weight to hold it down.

The driver and passenger were not hurt though the driver thought that they were goners and that they would die. Sanding of the highway began right after the accident.

Oma celebrates birthday

An 83rd birthday party for Marie Visser, known around Vavenby as Oma, was held on Sunday, Jan. 8. Her daughter, Mary Vollans, prepared all of the food that included a vegetable tray, hors d’oeuvres, an angel food cake with strawberries, and plum pudding with sauce.

About a dozen people attended the cheerful event.

Visser was looking forward to the next day, her actual birthday. Originally from Holland, she said that relatives still there and friends she had grown up with would phone her on the ninth.
