A community partnership ensured pop bottles didn’t end up in the local landfill, while also supporting a local skating club.
The Raft Mountain Skating Club would like to send a big thank you to SA Energy for donating their bottles over about five months, raising almost $2,400.
In the summer of 2020, the Raft Mountain Skating Club (RMSC) heard that SA Energy, former contractor in the area for the Trans Mountain Pipeline, was looking for a local club to donate their bottles to — the Club jumped at the opportunity.
Barb Coates (nee Waddlegger) said two SA Energy employees, Kevin Thalheimer, the main yard loaderman, and foreman Shaun Kleckner worked together to build a couple of bins for the workers to toss their empties, providing them the opportunity to not only limit the waste they create, but to contribute to the community they were working in.
The team also provided personal protective equipment and on-site training to the club so they could haul the bottles from the yard safely.
Wayne Ross, the truck push foreman, also was very helpful and supportive, said Coates, helping RMSC load the bottles into their truck.
While SA Energy is no longer working in the area, the club was able to raise almost $2,400 over the course of five months.
The RMSC would like to express a huge thank you to Kevin Thelheimer for setting up the fundraising opportunity, and to SA Energy and its workers for contributing to the local community.
