Police and the District of Clearwater launch positive ticket campaign

Clearwater RCMP are looking to hand out some “positive tickets” to youth this month.

The move is part of a “Positive Ticket Campaign,” launched in conjunction with a micro Buy Local campaign with the District of Clearwater. The test program aims to recognize youth who are spotted doing good things in the community with a $5 reward to one of four local businesses.

This could include everything from wearing a helmet, to picking up litter, helping someone, riding safely and being a good role model.

“It changes the conversation between the RCMP and youth and provides direct purchasing into our local businesses,” said Wylie Bystedt, economic development officer with the DOC. “What we’re hoping is that as RCMP are out and around the community, they’re actively looking for positive things.”

The program is based on a similar one Vancouver launched years ago and tweaked for this community. Bystedt said they decided to tie it in with a buy local campaign because Clearwater doesn’t have a swimming pool or movie theatre like bigger centres.

Youth who are issued with a positive ticket can redeem it at one of four locations: Clearwater Stop, Double R Pizza & Subs, Jasper Way Inn Food Trailer and Wild Flour Bakery. The businesses are in different locations in Clearwater, giving them an idea of where the program might work best.

“They can get an ice cream or a smoothie, whatever kids are into now,” Bystedt said. “We’re hoping the kids will take advantage of going to local businesses.”
