Photos show before and after of Avola sawmill

The Avola sawmill closed in about 1973 when Weyerhaeuser opened its new sawmill in Vavenby

Two vertical photos, one an aerial shot taken by the provincial government in the early 1970s (l), the other a Google image recently taken from a satellite (r), show the before and the after of the site occupied by KP Wood Products sawmill at Avola. As reported in the Valley Voice: Father and son celebrate milestones, Sowaran Singh Heer started work at the KP Wood sawmill in Avola soon after coming to Canada in 1966.

The Avola sawmill, along with mills in Blue River and Kamloops, were closed in about 1973 when Weyerhaeuser opened its new sawmill in Vavenby. According to a news report from the time, the new operation employed 300, while the three older mills had employed 225.
