Daughter Mary Vollans held an open house at her own home to help Oma celebrate.

Vollans served a wonderful array of food plus coffee, tea, and homemade apple cider to drink. She created a delicious trifle for the birthday cake.

Oma kept remarking on how overwhelmed she was with all of the cards and gifts she received from her friends.

One of her granddaughters and two of the great - grandchildren arrived from Kamloops for the party.

Everyone had a good time visiting with Visser and she did not seem to tire.

As Oma would say, “God willing,” everyone will be back next year for her 91st.

Kids enjoy skating party

The first skating party of the new year was held on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 7, at Vavenby’s outdoor rink.

Approximately 15 children showed up and many more adults to take in the fun. There were chips, cookies, and barbecued hot dogs to eat and hot chocolate and coffee to drink. All the food was donated.

The day was overcast and cool but not bitterly cold like previous days. A light hail fell partway through but did not dampen anyone’s spirits.

The children had fun on the ice, playing tag or showing off their skills to the admiring adults watching. Some used the hockey sticks and puck that were available.

The skaters did not want to go when their parents decided it was too cold to stand around anymore. By then a sharp wind had started to blow.

Thanks should go out to Kevin Sheffield for organizing the party, to those who donated the food, and to Rolf Schuchardt for plowing away the snow to make a driveway to the rink.
