At first glance it looked as if these workers were enjoying a rest on the lawn in front of Barr K Treats, but they were actually counting every vehicle that passed the Mountain Road and Highway 5 intersection the end of last month.
Tricia Klein, a development approvals technician, and Shawn Clough, program manager, for the Ministry of Transport (MOT), were compiling the Traffic Count that was taking place at two stations in Barriere for the MOT, and this was their last day of counting here.
The counters stated that this is part of a large area operation that reaches from north of Vavenby to the snow shed on the Coquihalla Highway. In the North Thompson area the count was scheduled to take place north of Heffley Creek in the communities of Barriere and Little Fort.
Clough said, “On completion of the count, a report is presented to the MOT and a model will be made to assist in the decisions for future highway improvements into various aspects such as left turn lanes, etc.”
It was interesting to find out that between 3,500 to 4,500 vehicles passed through this Barriere checkpoint each day.
