Hot weather didn’t stop 43 golfers from lining up at their respective holes at Lacarya Golf Course in Blackpool, Saturday Aug. 20. Clearwater Rotary’s annual event uses the “Best Ball” approach: everyone in the team hits their own ball, but then moves on from the one selected as having the best position to reach the green. Beside the tee-off for each hole, neat signs displayed the names of generous hole sponsors.
No player could resist checking out the abundance of prizes also donated by the amazing businesses, merchants and companies in Clearwater and elsewhere in the North Thompson Valley, as well as Kamloops and Williams Lake. Temptingly useful items and multiple gift certificates would disappear quickly as teams were called up after the game. Everyone had a chance to win something after the special prize winners had their chance.
Abbey Bates won the 50/50 draw while Lyle MacKenzie’s numbered duck was first down the stream, winning the duck race. Donated items were available for a silent auction and there was the promise of a putting contest after the fine dinner. This fiercely-fought competition was eventually won by Tyler Ford.
The happy overall game winners with the lowest score were: Landon Bellows, Brandon McLin, Calvin Jeck and Tyler Ford. Men’s long drive was slogged by Brandon McLin, while Sheila Colter won the ladies’ long drive. Roger Meyer won KP, or closest to the pin for the men, but no such luck for the ladies.
The whole event was fun for everyone, whether participating, helping, or cheering players on. Thanks go out to Clearwater Rotary members who made this happen and to all who supported it in so many different ways.
