Volunteer firefighters from Clearwater and Barriere got some expert training in how to drive their firetrucks the weekend before last, reports deputy chief Guy Holland.

“It went really well. It was very good training and all the members did well,” said Holland. “Everyone enjoyed themselves.”

Bob Weicker from Frontline Fire Department Training Inc. started things off with a 2-1/2 hour class for firefighters from both departments on Thursday evening, April 7.

From Friday until Sunday the Clearwater members practiced their driving skills. Training included an obstacle course set up in the Headwaters Forest District compound. The firefighters appreciated having the use of the space, Holland noted.

The trainees had to move forward and then backwards through a series of obstacles set up by Weicker. Because of the size of the firetrucks they did much of their driving using mirrors. Each spent about two or three hours practicing.

All those taking part also got a one-on-one session with the Frontline instructor, driving around town in the firetrucks and testing their skills on the hills and other difficult sections on local roads.

Weicker gave each firefighter’s driving ability a thorough assessment and suggested areas needing improvement for each.

More firefighters needed

Clearwater Volunteer Fire Department needs more members, Holland added.

Anyone who is willing to commit to the weekly Thursday evening training meetings, plus the occasional weekend session, should drop by the firehall during a practice or call the hall at 250-674-3733 and leave a message.

The deputy chief also asked that everyone be Fire Smart.
