Clearwater resident Marnie Peters wants to give back and raise awareness for people who have disabilities. That's why she is making plans to attend the Lions Foundation of Canada Purina Walk For Dog Guides in Chilliwack on May 25.
Peters knows firsthand how valuable a guide dog can be. With help from the Lions Foundation, Peters received her dog Valour last June.
“I was paralyzed in surgery eight years ago, said Peters. “Receiving this dog has helped me with my social life. He opened up my world. I feel like I'm part of society now.”
Peters' guide dog Valour is two years old.
“He was specifically chosen and suited for my needs. The training process included a three-week training period with the dog in Ontario, all expenses paid by the Lions,” said Peters. One dog costs $25,000.

Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides is a national charitable foundation that was created by the Lions of Canada. Its mission is to assist Canadians with a medical or physical disability by providing them with dog guides at no cost.
Since 1983, Lions Foundation of Canada has been providing specially trained dog guides to men, women and children from coast to coast. In addition to training dog guides for people who are blind or visually impaired, dog guides are also trained to meet the needs of Canadians with hearing, medical and physical disabilities, epilepsy, autism and Type 1 diabetes.
All dog guides and required training, including transportation and accommodation, are provided at no cost to qualified applicants. The Lions Foundation does not receive any government funding and relies on the support of fundraising events like the Purina® Walk for Dog Guide.
