Instructor Sharon Neufeld (centre) works with participants to make chutney during a recent community kitchen workshop.

Funds raised through the local Raise a Reader campaign were used to sponsor a community kitchen workshop in partnership with the District of Clearwater’s Healthy Living Program.

Participants worked with instructor Sharon Neufeld to prepare and preserve chutney.

Community kitchens are a very good way to promote literacy in the community in a fun and healthy way. Participants receive many benefits from participating in this type of program. They allow participants to:

• learn to prepare healthy, low cost foods

• develop social relationships within the community

• share their skills with others and learn new ones

• practice and develop skill such as; reading, math, team work, organization, budgeting, planning and safe food preparation skills that are directly translatable to the home and work environment.

This fall the Community Recreation, Healthy Living Program has also offered programs such as salsa making and preserving for kids as well as learn to make relish.
