Family Day is celebrated on Monday, Feb. 20th and is a great way to reconnect with family and loved ones.

Though schools are closed to enjoy the holiday, Clearwater Secondary School will open their doors and invite families to come and enjoy a variety of activities. Stations will be set up in multiple classrooms throughout the school and are available from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Lisa Fraser has been organizing the event for four years now and is the English teacher and literacy coordinator at Clearwater Secondary School. She said she loves being able to offer an accessible and free event for young families right in the thick of winter when everyone is eagerly awaiting spring. The event also takes the pressure off of parents and caregivers to organize a day of fun for kids. Instead, they can bring their families to the school and enjoy the different stations.

Included in the events are sensory bins, a food station, open gym time, science experiments, a STEAM presentation, face painting, homemade bath bombs, a Polaroid photo station, tabletop games, marble mazes, painting, Lego and more.

This will be the first in-person Family Day event in the last two years due to COVID-19. Prior to this, they offered a drive-thru event where families could come and grab a take-and-play bag filled with activities. Last year they gave out all 125 bags.

This year Fraser anticipates 80 family groups coming with around 125 kids. There will be over 20 student volunteers, along with teachers and other individuals from around the community, including Fraser’s mom.

There will be coffee for parents to enjoy while their kids run around, whether they’re colouring or playing floor hockey in the gym. All are welcome.

Of course, there are plenty of other ways you can spend time with your family, including taking advantage of the entire weekend. Maybe it’s a stay-cation where you bundle up in pajamas, watch movies and have an indoor picnic.

Perhaps it’s venturing out into the cold to build a snowman or go skiing.

You could also host a family baking competition or take it all the way back to the 60s by playing an old fashion game of Twister (beware: it’s a game suited for the brave and flexible).

Whatever you get up to, keep it simple. An after-dinner living room dance party can go a long way.
