Clearwater honours veterans on Remembrance Day

The ceremony was live-streamed on the District of Clearwater’s Facebook page

Clearwater residents and visitors took part in reflection Thursday, in honour and memory of military personnel who have served, are serving or died while protecting the right and freedoms enjoyed by Canadians.

The Remembrance Day ceremony was held in Reginald Small Park. The event was not open to the public and was live-streamed for those at home to watch through the District of Clearwater’s Facebook page, though a small group of people did quietly watch from the sidewalk.

The decision to close the event was made by the local Legion to protect its members, veterans and the vulnerable from COVID-19. Mayor and council respected the Legion’s decision and watched from their homes, according to the DOC website.

Former Canadian paratrooper Sgt. Randy Hedlund was parade marshal and called out the names of fallen comrades in the past year from RCMP, military and Legion. Charlotte Cederholm, Branch 259 president, was master of ceremonies and noted the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 259 “would like to thank all of those who assisted with the set-up of the event, those working behind hte scenes and the Clearwater RCMP detachment who acted as guards at the cenotaph and were responsible for the masting of the flags.”
