Clearwater Girl Guides on the path to excellence

Caitlyn Masse and Cadence Cisna earned their Emergency First Aid certificates

Clearwater Girl Guides Caitlyn Masse and Cadence Cisna, who are third year Pathfinders, earned their Emergency First Aid certificates Saturday, Jan. 14.

The training on emergency first aid means the girls completed the first aid portion of their Canada Cord requirements and they also chose to get certified so they could practice it when they turn 16.

The Canada Cord is the highest award that a Pathfinder, guides aged 12 to 14, can earn.

The requirements include completing the Pathfinder Program as well as extra initiative in the areas of community service, volunteering, and specific hours spent in developing leadership or camping skills.

Michelle Masse is Caitlyn Masse’s mother and the local Pathfinder and guide leader. She said that the program helps the girls learn new skills, but the activities are based on the girls’ interests.

“We kind of have an outline of what we do, but it is all girl-driven. It is all what members of that unit want to do.”

Fourteen-year-old Caitlyn Masse said her Emergency First Aid certificate will be useful during future Girl Guides adventures, which require at least one first aid certified person to be present. She is currently preparing for her first winter camping trip.

Currently, the Clearwater Pathfinders have three girls. Caitlyn Masse does not mind having a tight-knit group, but it would be nice to have a larger group in order to do certain activities, she said.

Girls that complete this award also earn four high school credits. Girl Guides of Canada is offering 50 per cent off registration for any girl that signs up now until March. You can register online at www.https://register.girlguides.ca.
