At 2:26 p.m., Clearwater RCMP received an abandoned 911 call from a convenience store located on Young Road in Clearwater. Const. Van Woudenberg was nearby and arrived within minutes. Upon arrival, the officer spoke to the complainant, a local female, who informed him that a known 52-year-old local man had just been in the store and tried leaving with a number of items, including a lantern, under his jacket.
The employee had caught him and the male had given back the items, as he didn’t have the money to pay for them. The male then left on foot, heading southbound on Old North Thompson Hwy shortly before police arrived. Patrols were made at the time, but the man was not located.
Const. Van Woudenberg returned to the store and obtained a statement from the complainant who also confirmed they had video surveillance of the incident, which will be obtained by police. The investigation is ongoing.
That same afternoon at 2:15 p.m., Clearwater RCMP received a call from a 65-year-old Kamloops woman regarding their truck and camper trailer stuck in Wells Gray Park. The vehicle had been abandoned there due to a landslide in 2020 that had washed out the entire roadway. The truck and trailer were unable to be removed from the area.
The complainant’s son and a mechanic friend hiked back to the area in the last day or two and found the vehicle broken and vandalized. Someone had decided to take advantage of the misfortune of the complainant and her family, and had broken in through the sunroof of the trailer. Once inside, they then needlessly damaged items inside and then left the doors open so the interior was now full of mold.
Police provided them with a file number for insurance purposes. Police are asking anyone with any information on this incident to come forward to speak with them or Crimestoppers should they wish to remain anonymous.
That evening, at 10:09 p.m., Const. Tobin checked a 45-year-old Edmonton female driver, and lone occupant in her vehicle, while conducting a road check on Old North Thompson Hwy at Lakeview Drive.
The woman advised that she had a couple of drinks with dinner and was on her way back to camp. The Alcohol Screening Device demand was read, and the driver provided two samples which both displayed “Fail” which was shown to her. As a result, her driver’s licence was seized, and she was notified of her 90-day driving prohibition and served a copy of the documentation, which was read and explained to her.
She refused a ride back to the camp (one kilometre away) offered by Const. Tobin. A local tow company attended and impounded the vehicle and she was provided with a copy of the 30-day Vehicle Impoundment form.
Clearwater RCMP responded to 51 calls for service this past week.
