Thompson Nicola Regional District director, Lee Onslow, loves the Blue River Community Garden and had a creative idea for a new addition to the neighbourhood garden area and gathering place recently.
"I reached out to the Men's Shed in Clearwater and asked if they could build me a lending library that I will donate to the Blue River Community Garden. It's bright and colourful and will allow for the sharing of books in our community. I paid for the materials used to make the library and made a financial donation to the Men's Shed. They are a good group of guys who enjoy working on projects," said Onslow.
The donation is being installed at the Blue River Community Garden as a "gift" from the Onslow family. The garden also has an enclosed gazebo outfitted with mosquito and bug proof mesh, chairs and tables where residents can gather to visit, enjoy a meal or read. The garden will soon be a buzz of activity with spring on the way and provides raised boxes and beds for the locals to grow fresh produce and share their harvest. Weekly barbecues, wing nights and volunteer work bees are just some of the things taking place there drawing the close-knit community together.
If you are driving through Blue River and looking to take a nice break near Eleanor Lake in the centre of town there is a nice little beach and picnic area with a playground and don't forget to drive by the Blue River Community Hall and check out the Community Garden and gazebo behind the hall.
