40 YEARS AGO: Two Grade 10 students would be arriving in a few days time to Clearwater from Mexico as part of a student exchange program at Clearwater Secondary School. The two, Jorge Brown and Elizabeth Cruz, would spend six months attending school at CSS while living in two Clearwater homes. In exchange, two Clearwater students, Lisa Wadlegger and Danny London, would travel to Mexico at the end of March and stay at the homes of the Mexican students while their counterparts board in their homes in Clearwater.

35 YEARS AGO: The new Clearwater Improvement District comprising approximately 10000 acres will now consist of 1135 parcels of property within its boundaries. CID secretary Edith Kinzel said the total was made up of 941 properties within the old boundaries, 71 in Sunshine Valley, 36 in Miller subdivision and 85 in Greer subdivision. The CID will be responsible for providing both fire protection and street lighting to those areas. other Letters Patent covering functions in these areas such as water provision will remain separate.

20 YEARS AGO: Weyerhaeuser started road-building in Clearwater’s watershed in preparation for logging. Clearwater Improvement District administrator Kim Heyman noted they’ll have to start testing the water for turbidity, though Clearwater Forest District manager Max Tanner assured her all precautions had been taken. Public health would double its monitoring from the watershed during the logging period. The improvement district has no legislated authority to control what happens in its watershed, noted Heyman. Most of the logging was to take place during the winter months and make use of winter roads.

10 YEARS AGO: Ten brave souls took the plunge to herald in the new year with a splash at the Little Fort ferry slip on Jan. 1, 2012, during the 25th annual Polar Bear Dip into the North Thompson River. There was no challenge offered between the municipalities of Clearwater and Barriere — it was just a fun event for all. Of the participants, five were from Little Fort, four from Clearwater and one from Chu Chua. A large crowd of supporters came out to cheer on the hardy dippers.

5 YEARS AGO: It was the most wonderful time of the year for Barriere resident Kelvin Fadear when he won $1 million on Christmas Eve from the Dec. 24, 2016, Lotto 6/49 draw. Asked how he felt to be a millionaire, Fadear, 76, replied, “I don’t know, I’ve never been one before.” He said he purchased the winning ticket at the Knights Inn in Barriere. Fadear said he would take the winnings, put it in a bank, divvy up most to his children and keep a few dollars for himself “in case I find something I like.” Fadear moved back to Barriere after 21 years of service with the Vancouver Fire Department.
