Tracker Kevin Deckert describes the route of travel of two missing snowshoers to Clearwater Search and Rescue responder Mike Chambers and Cons. Paul Brisson. Full scale search plans were cut short when the two were found safe and able to walk out under their own power. This image originally appeared in the Feb. 4, 1997, issue of the Times.

40 YEARS AGO: About 18 people put their snowmobiles through the hundred mile circuit through the Raft River area in the fifth annual Snow-a-rama jointly sponsored by the CNT Lions and the Clearwater Snowdrifters. Six to eight inches of fresh snow on the 50-mile loop, travelled twice by most snowmobilers, made the going pretty slow on the first run. Several snowmobilers got stuck on the circuit and though most people started at about 10 a.m., it took until 6 p.m. to finish the run. A total of $1,544 was raised in the Snow-a-rama, which was used towards helping crippled children in B.C.

35 YEARS AGO: The RCMP would be testing a new piece of equipment in an effort to detect and remove impaired drivers from Clearwater roads. The ALERT (Alcohol Level Evaluation roadside Tester) had been operating in Kamloops over previous weeks on a trial basis, and was to be used by local officers for a week. The machine was effectively used for some time in other provinces and was then introduced to B.C. Police vehicles would be parked outside of liquor stores at times during the week and anyone wishing to try the ALERT could flag down the cruiser for their free test.

25 YEARS AGO: The suspicious, agonized death of three dogs and two cats led Clearwater RCMP to suspect someone was deliberately setting poison bait out and a warning was issues to pet owners to watch their animals and their property closely. The animals that died showed similar symptoms, becoming disoriented, convulsing, and dying within five to six hours. The symptoms were not those of antifreeze poisoning. It was believed the animals were picking up the poison from their own property.

15 YEARS AGO: Award-winning children’s entertainer Graham Walker performed to a gym packed with an estimated 200 pajama-clad children and parents in Clearwater. Sponsored by Success By 6 and the Raft River Elementary School PAC, Walker ensured the youngest and smallest int he crowd got the best seats in the house and with children gathered at his feet, opened his concert with his theme song, “Friends Are Better Than Crocodiles.” Some parents were also spotted in the audience, wearing pajamas and robes.

5 YEARS AGO: Evergreen Acres would like to add another 20 independent housing units for seniors, according to society finance chair Linda Selbee and director Dave Meehan. The plan envisages 16 new single units plus four two-bedroom suites. The new units would be located east of Ed Buck Manor on land that belongs to the society. Wells Gray Community Forest has put in $300,000 that will be used as seed money to help raise the estimated $2.75 million needed.
