25 YEARS AGO: Raft River Elementary students ‘adopt a team’

40 YEARS AGO: About 3,600 litres of gasoline were sold during Wildwood Esso’s “Thankful Tankful” fundraising drive for the fifth annual Timmy’s Christmas Telethon. Proceeds from the event went towards buying vans for the disabled. Members of the Clearwater Lions worked for a few hours each on a Saturday and Sunday afternoon pumping gasoline for some of the 110 customers that pulled up to the pumps during the 24 hour fundraising drive.

30 YEARS AGO: Mike Wiegele’s Heli-ski Village in Blue River played host to both a Level 1 avalanche course for humans, and a course put on by the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association (CARDA). The program included a public demonstration with volunteers from both courses. About 26 people turned out for the Level 1 course, while 24 humans and 15 dogs came to Blue River for the CARDA program. Two of the dogs were with the German search and rescue organization.

25 YEARS AGO: Raft River Elementary students wrote letters to the visiting Aggasiz Chieftans volleyball team, welcoming them to Clearwater and wishing them luck, as part of an “adopt a team” campaign run by the organizing committee. Each team member and coach received a letter from Mr. Whelen’s Grade 5 class, who also attended the first game at the elementary school to cheer the team on. The following day, the Aggasiz team members and coaches personally delivered autographed team pictures with a personal note to each child written on the back.

20 YEARS AGO: Clearwater voters decisively chose not to incorporate as a municipality. The final count of the referendum was 498 (62 per cent) No versus 299 (37 per cent) Yes. Voter turnout was about 60 per cent.Thompson-Nicola Regional District area A director Bert Walker was disappointed, noting incorporation was one way for the community to move forward and grow. One concern on the No side was taxes and the economy with the slump in the forest industry.

1 YEARS AGO: An early morning fire at the Dutch Lake Community Centre took out the building’s chip silo, used to store biofuel. Thanks to quick action by the Clearwater Volunteer Fire Department and a few passersby calling in the blaze, the damage to the DLCC gym was mostly superficial. Crew arrived on scene about 10 minutes after the 4 a.m. call, just as the flames started to reach the roof of the gym. RCMP were at the scene to direct traffic, as well as Mayor Merlin Blackwell, chief administrative officer Leslie Groulx and facilities manager Roger Mayer.
