January 16, 1941 - June 15, 2022
On June 15, 2022, Betsy Hystad passed away peacefully in Kamloops with her family at her side. Betsy will be lovingly remembered and missed by her two girls, Terry (John), and Shirley. Her five grandchildren, Ashley (Mitch), Eric, Cody, Tyler (Dani), and Steven, along with her two great granddaughters, Karissa, and Kylie.
Betsy was born in Vancouver in 1941 and came home to Clearwater as soon as the snow cleared. She was the oldest of Stan and Betty's girls, and was soon joined by her sisters, Penny (Lorne), Yvonne (Gary), Linda (Don) and Sue (Wade).
Betsy grew up in Clearwater, graduating from Clearwater Secondary School in 1959. She married the love of her life, Wayne in 1961. Together, and with their two girls, their grandkids, and great granddaughters, they shared their very active lives camping, fishing, skiing, snowmobiling, golfing, curling, and car racing. Wayne passed away in October 2020, and Betsy made no secret of the fact that she was looking forward to seeing him again.
Betsy's family was everything to her. She would often be found hosting a sleepover for her grandkids, many of her nieces and nephews, and taking them to swimming lessons, or camping at the lake. They would all look forward to having "Gramma", or "Auntie Bets" teach them how to bake bread or her famous cinnamon buns.
She was an avid fisherwoman, keeping up with the best of them, and hoisting many a rainbow or lake trout to win a derby or two. Her favourite times were camping and fishing at a lake and spending time with her big family.
Betsy took comfort in her last few weeks, being able to look up the valley towards the North Thompson and Clearwater. She didn't stop telling stories of times back home and looked forward to sharing them with visitors. Her quick wit was sharper than ever, and visitors were often left laughing or being stung by her one-liners.
We will miss you a ton mom but take some comfort knowing that large clap of thunder shortly after 5:00 pm on Wednesday, June 15th, was dad's big bear hug announcing you had arrived.
The interment is for both Wayne and Betsy at the Clearwater Cemetery at 11:00 am on Sunday, July 10th with a tea and celebration for both to follow right after at 12:00 noon, at the Blackpool Hall. Terry and Shirley encourage people to please come and share stories of Wayne and Betsy, and to provide written copies so that they can compile them for the grandkids to ensure they are passed along. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice in Kamloops would be appreciated.
