Two fined for discarding cigarettes

This past week traffic services members from Clearwater issued two motorists $575 fines for discarding their lit cigarette butts from their vehicles.

On one occasion near Clearwater, police were following a vehicle when the officer witnessed the driver throw a lit cigarette out of his vehicle.

This Alberta driver received a $575 ticket and a lengthy lecture from police.

The driver explained that he had just purchased the vehicle in B.C., which was not equipped with an ash tray and was returning home to Alberta.

On the second occasion police were conducting a road check in Barriere when they spoke to a B.C. motorist. Police concluded the traffic stop and as the vehicle was departing, Police witnessed the driver throw a lit cigarette out of the vehicle. Officers subsequently extended the motorist’s visit and issued the driver a $575 fine for his actions.

RCMP will continue to issue fines to motorists who demonstrate irresponsible behaviour that contributes to increased wildfire risks.
