District of Clearwater has appointed K9 Control out of Vernon as the District’s animal control officer.

Town council made the decision during its Sept. 19 meeting.

“It’s about time,” commented councillor Dennis Greffard.

As of Sept. 12 the municipality had received eight complaints regarding dogs threatening or attacking other dogs, poultry and so on, said chief administrative officer Leslie Groulx. At least one of them involved one dog killing another.

Wells Gray Country (TNRD Area A) is also hiring the same company as its animal control officer, Groulx said.

The animal control officer will be paid $500 per month as a retainer plus authorized expenses.

The money will come from the District’s bylaw enforcement budget.

Councillor Barry Banford noted that there is a process to recover costs from the owner if a dog or other animal is impounded.
