There is a non-profit, volunteer organization that many people are unaware of. It is the North Thompson Communities Foundation (NTCF).

The foundation’s area of interest extends from McLure to Blue River. It has been around for 13 years.

It collects donations and then distributes them annually through its granting cycle to other non-profit organizations, groups, and societies for a variety of purposes, events, activities, and programs.

As of now the board consists of seven directors but is always looking for directors and volunteers. Meetings are held when needed and weather permitting.

Vavenby’s Lisa Leger, chairperson for information and communications committee, designed a new brochure explaining the NTCF. People can pick one up at local businesses. The foundation will set up racks with the brochures and business cards plus donation cans in any local business that asks.

One of the bursaries handed out this year was the new annual Redman Family Memorial Bursary for $1,000.

It went to Leanna Mitchell of Barriere for her ongoing education within the agricultural field.

NTCF is also accepting applications until Aug. 31 for the Donnie Nicholson Memorial Trades Bursary for $500.

It goes to students who have completed the first half of a course in the trades.

Leger said that this year the Communities Foundations of Canada is celebrating Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation with a new funding opportunity.

The Community Fund for Canada’s 150th is a collaborative effort, seeded by the Government of Canada and extraordinary leaders from coast to coast, and matched and delivered locally by Canada’s 191 community foundations.

In recognition of this unique opportunity, NTCF has awarded the Canada 150 grants to two separate organizations, one in Barriere and the other in Blue River.

Students learn gymnastics

On Monday, June 5, the Vavenby Primary School students went by bus to Raft River Elementary School for a day of gymnastics, games, songs, and dancing.

They also went to the library for a story. All of the students had lots of fun.
